Why a Probe Instead of a Signal?

If synchronization is the binding constraint, then the correct instrument is not a transmitter. It is something patient, local, and physically present.

What we actually know

A signal decays with distance, arrives once, and cannot wait. An object does not. Humanity already reasons this way at small scale: we send probes to Mars and Europa rather than shouting at them. Von Neumann's self-replicating probe argument and Bracewell's 'lurker' proposal — an artifact placed in a target system that waits for the locals to become interesting — are decades-old ideas in the serious literature, precisely because they defeat the timing problem that radio cannot.

Where the extrapolation begins

A civilization that cared about neighbors would not gamble on a wavefront crossing light-years at the right moment. It would spend energy once, place a durable observer, and let time do the work. Under Keen's terms this collapses fs, synchronization, from a near-zero fraction to something close to one. That is a rational engineering decision, not an act of benevolence or aggression.

What the novel invents

Interstellar transit of a sixty-one-meter object, indefinite station-keeping without measurable momentum exchange, and materials that do not degrade over centuries are all beyond human engineering — that is why this article is labelled Servator-Enabled. The novel takes the reasoning as far as physics allows and then admits, plainly, where it stops.

  • A probe arrives and says nothing for two hundred years. What would you conclude, and what would you be wrong about?
  • Why is 'they came for our water' a weak argument about motive?
