The Keen Equation: Overlap, Not Abundance

What we actually know

The ideas underneath are all standard: light speed is finite, civilizations have finite lifetimes, geology erases evidence, and a signal must be aimed, received, and recognized. Two civilizations transmitting for a thousand years each, eighty thousand light-years apart, both listening continuously, will each vanish seventy-nine thousand years before the other's first evidence arrives. They shared a galaxy and an era and had no possibility of contact. The 'Silurian hypothesis' makes the same point about time: after tens of millions of years, plastics degrade, structures erode, isotopic anomalies blur, and crust is recycled. An empty museum is not an empty past.

Where the extrapolation begins

The Keen Equation separates what Drake bundles together. Np, suitable worlds in the region considered. fl, where life establishes. fi, where intelligence arises. ft, where technology is built. fd, where a signature is detectable at the time of observation. fg, environments stable enough for complexity to persist. fp, proximity — close enough to matter. fr, range — inside the reach of the relevant signal, sensor, or vehicle. fs, synchronization — overlapping after distance and travel time. Proximity, range, and synchronization are the neglected filters: a nearby civilization can be outside our range, one inside range can transmit at the wrong century, and two can coexist yet be separated by more time than either survives. Keen called it a filter chain, not a predictive instrument — the variables are even more correlated than Drake's.

What the novel invents

Dr. Guillaume Keen is a character in the CROWN universe, and the equation is written for the novel. Treat it as a teaching device, not literature. Hartmann's defense of writing it as algebra at all is worth keeping: 'Human beings take prose as an invitation to stop reading. Algebra makes us nervous enough to examine the assumptions.' Her conclusion is the story's thesis — life may arise regularly, intelligence may arise more than once, but two civilizations must overlap in space, time, capability, attention, and communication method before either can know the other exists. The galaxy can look crowded and still sound silent.

Questions to think about

  • Which is the harder problem: rare life, or badly synchronized life?
  • Two civilizations exist in the same galaxy at the same time and can never meet. Is either one 'alone'?
  • Keen's terms are correlated, so the multiplication is not strictly valid. Does that make the equation useless or just honest?
