Is Intelligence a Hierarchy?
We keep drawing intelligence as a ladder with humans at the top. The evidence looks much more like a bush.
Established ScienceIntelligence is not a ladder with us on the top rung. It is a bush, and we are one branch of it.
What we actually know
Octopuses solve problems with a nervous system that is largely distributed into their arms. Dolphins carry signature whistles that function like names. Corvids plan for future needs. Ant colonies compute solutions no individual ant represents. Fungal networks route resources between trees. None of these systems is a worse version of a human brain; each is a different answer to a different problem.
Where the extrapolation begins
If intelligence is plural on one planet, it is almost certainly plural across planets. That reframes first contact: the hard part is not whether an alien intelligence is smarter than us, but whether its way of being intelligent overlaps with ours enough to build a shared meaning.
What the novel invents
The Servator's message is short, and every human government reads it as an invitation phrased the way humans phrase invitations. The novel's central mistake is a translation error committed by people who never considered that they were translating.
